Come Inside

Today’s installment of Come Inside takes us to the first home of a young couple.

Names: Amanda and Victor

Occupations: Teacher, Associate Consultant

Do you have any pets? Yes, 2 cats named Maxwell and Oscar

Do you have any kids? No

How long have you lived here? 1 ½ yrs

How do you make your decorating decisions? I usually start with ideas I like and go from there. We often find ourselves in places like Home Depot, Ikea, and various independent décor stores looking for ideas to build upon. We also love going to open houses in different neighbourhoods which can be a source for ideas and inspirations.

How would you describe your design style? Simple Contemporary

Is there an item you are quietly (or not so quietly) coveting? We have been looking for a piece of art for our large wall in the basement for quite some time. It is a bright blue wall and it has been challenging to find a piece that works perfectly.

Do you follow design trends? Or pay attention to the design world at all? Vic does not follow trends he tends to go with what he likes regardless if it is “in or not.” I tend to try and follow the design world a little; however if I like a particular idea or style I will also go with it.

What was your biggest challenge in decorating the space? The open concept of the main floor was a bit of a challenge. We struggled with defining the rooms verses having them flow into one another.

What is your preference, white walls or deep blue walls? Deep blue

Where do you look to for design inspiration? We are always watching HGTV and DIY network and get a lot of ideas from there. I also subscribe to House and Home, and Style at Home magazines. You can find design ideas everywhere.

What is the one thing you wish you could change about your home? The wall that separates the dining area from the living room, I should have listened to Vic’s idea of having the builder remove it. You learn from your mistakes.

What are you most proud of in your home? I have always wanted to make my house a place that is warm and welcoming and I am proud to say that I have achieved the feel that I was going for. Victor is particularly proud of his idea to convert the main floor laundry closet into a pantry. It has proven to work much better for us.

What is your preference, carpet or hardwood floors? Hardwood

Is designing your home a priority for you? Yes it is because to me your home is your sanctuary. It is important to enjoy the space you spend the most of your time in.

I appreciate the simple lines in this house, and the dark wood tones. The shots of colour are not overdone, and enough to break up the neutrals. The open space on the main floor brings in light from all angels and keeps the main floor bright for many hours in the day. There is nothing like natural sunlight.

What do you think of how this young couple has done their first home?
